Abstract: Code-switching is one the systematic outcomes of language contacts in any community. The sociolinguistic environment of Algeria provides an ideal setting in which a large number of languages and dialects can come into contact with one another. The purpose of this work is to investigate the influence that code switching has on the educational process for EFL learners. To embark on such a study, a mixed-method approach has been selected. This approach consists of handing out a questionnaire to 39 English Foreign Languages students and conducting an interview with two English Foreign Languages teachers. According to the findings, the most likely reason for the learners' reliance on code switching (from English to Arabic) during classroom participation is that they have a limited number of English lexical items at their disposal.
