Description: | Abstract: The Palestinian issue is a pivotal issue in the Arab East and West, capturing the attention of the entire Arab nations. Coinciding with the imposition of the French protectorate over Tunisia, Palestine witnessed significant developments in 1881. France began intervening in Tunisia under the pretext of protecting its interests, leading to the signing of the protectorate treaty in 1883. At the same time, Palestine was witnessing the rise of the Zionist movement and the emergence of Jewish immigration, which led to increasing tensions with the local population. The leaders of the Tunisian movements were not satisfied with the struggle and political resistance against the French, but their thinking and orientations towards the Palestinian cause were parallel to their liberationist orientations for their country, Tunisia. Sheikh Abdel Aziz Al-Thaalibi had a relationship with Palestine and its men, as he visited it many times and played a distinguished role in reconciling some Palestinian political opponents. He also contributed to introducing the Tunisian cause in the Arab East and Palestine and urging Tunisians to pay attention to the Palestinian cause. The year 1947 also witnessed Sheikh Muhammad Al-Fadhel Ben Ashour’s focus on the Palestinian cause, as he highlighted its extreme importance and played the role of the preacher and instigator defending “Palestine, the national homeland of the Arabs.” This name he made the title of a series of successive lectures that he delivered at the Khaldouniya Association Club between 1947 and 1948. Sheikh Al-Fadhel Ben Ashour opened his first lectures. As for the late Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba, he presented an initiative that represented finding a solution to the Palestinian cause, calling for the acceptance of the United Nations resolution issued on 29 November, 1947, stipulated the partition of Palestine into two states: one Arab and one Jewish. The Palestinian issue thus became the point of convergence or the main point of friction between Zionism and the Jewish minority on the one hand, and the Tunisian constitution and Islamic society on the other. |
