Abstract: Formative assessment impact on students’ achievement has received recognition among researchers and educators. This study attempts to tackle the fundamental issue of formative assessment in English language teaching. The present study discusses some key issues surrounding classroom assessment ranging from conceptual definitions and importance. The research reviews different roles of teachers and students through the formative assessment process. Next some defining characteristics and key principles are explored. Furthermore, it highlights the ongoing cycle of formative assessment (before-during-after instruction).Subsequently the study states the five key strategies of quality and effective assessment. Finally, the study critically examines the significance of formative assessments by putting much attention on students’ achievement, motivation and teachers’ efficacy
