Abstract: | Most Algerians have a reading knowledge of English, because the educational sector of the country puts the focus on morpho-syntactic structures and lexical-semantic units more than on phonetic realisations. .EFL students, who often face "speaking difficulties and pronunciation errors" which prevent them from attempting to publish or convert in English. Thus, this study is set to investigate a small sample of EFL second-year students at Ibn Khaldoun University, in particular, their English speech errors and whether their native tongue “Algerian Arabic variety (AAV)" has an effect on English pronunciation. It is sought to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data, so a mixed-method that is reflected through the use of "a printed questionnaire and audiotape interview" is opted 75 students are used as a sample. The results demonstrate that their issue isn't a matter of psychological but incorporates a physical aspect. Moreover, English bear the stamp of our culture and even that of our AAV phonological framework so it is very possible to have an "Algerian English ". The objective of this research is to understand and assist EFL learners to avoid cases of unintelligibility and miscommunication and to explore the correct sound system and method of learning proper RP English pronunciation. |
