Abstract: The present research work investigates the influence of the mother tongue interference on the EFL learners’ written production. It aims at explaining how first-year EFL students at Ibn Khaldoun University of Tiaret produce their writings in English with instances of negative transfer and other language errors. The research attempts to answer the main question “to what extent can the mother tongue interference be a reason of EFL learners’ writings? This study introduces the mother tongue, foreign language learning and language transfer. It highlights the writing skill and the common errors in EFL writing. In order to achieve the study’s objective, a descriptive method has been adopted. Data are collected via two research instruments; a questionnaire for students and a questionnaire for teachers. The results have shown that first-year EFL learners commit different kinds of errors and the common ones are interlingual and intralingual.
