Abstract: While there are many educational materials, textbooks in print form have always been reliable sources in the learning/ teaching process. They are designed to meet the needs of a specific generation in a specific era. Given this claim, the present study aims to examine students’ expectations and teachers’ attitudes towards the use of second generation English textbook, currently used in teaching first year middle school pupils, and its role in the digital era. This study opts for a mixed quantitative and qualitative method that combines two main methodological instruments; a questionnaire distributed to one hundred first year middle school pupils and an indirect interview directed to ten teachers of English language from different middle schools and different regions. The findings of this study reveal that second generation textbook as irreplaceable guide can, at some extent, help learners meet their needs but with the use of digital devices that should be appropriate for the topics embedded in the targeted textbook.
