Abstract: | The English language is important and international language. However, students are exposed to all its varieties Australian, Canadian, South African but mainly British and American. Therefore, this research aims at investigating the use of American English instead of the British one. The case study for this research work are Algerian students.50 third year EFL learners were chosen randomly.10 of them were interviewed and a questionnaire was distributed on the remaining 40 students. the work is divided into three chapters. the first one discuss the historical background of the English language and the differences between British and American varieties .The second chapter explains the linguistic situation in Algeria and its educational system. The third chapter tackles the collected data and discuss the main results. This latter reveals that students are well aware of the differences between British and American varieties .Students have more tendencies towards British English. It is their preferred variety. However, in the same vein, most of them are under the influence of American Culture. As a result, most of them use a mixture of both varieties. |
