Ahmed Francis was born in the city of Relizane in 1912. He pursued his higher education in France, where he obtained a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Paris. He returned to Algeria and began practicing medicine in the city of Sétif in 1942. Ahmed Francis initiated his political activism while he was a student at the French Faculty of Medicine, within the framework of the Association of North African Students. Upon his return to Algeria, he resumed his political activities and participated in the founding of the Friends of the Manifesto and Liberty movement. Following the massacres of 8 May 1945, he was arrested and deported to detention centers in the Sahara, where he remained until his release in 1946. In the same year, Ahmed Francis contributed to the establishment of the Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto and was appointed as the party’s delegate to the Algerian Assembly. After the Soummam Conference, he was appointed an additional member of the National Council of the Algerian Revolution. He undertook several diplomatic missions to Europe and Latin America in service of the Algerian cause, during which he met numerous political figures. He later became Minister of Finance in the first and second cabinets of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic, under the presidency of Ferhat Abbas (1958–1961). He also participated in the first Évian negotiations. Following the dismissal of Ferhat Abbas, Ahmed Francis was removed from office and subsequently withdrew from political life until Algeria’s independence. Ahmed Francis passed away on 31 August 1968 in Geneva after a long illness. He was buried in his hometown of Relizane, at the Sidi Abdelkader Cemeteryen_US
