Résumé: Everybody needs to have motivation and a reason for action. Foreign language learners should be offered the opportunity to be motivated and fulfill their learning orientations. The purpose of this study is to examine the students‘ integrative and instrumental motivation for learning English in the Algerian state secondary schools. Additionally, the study aims to recognize the factors that affect the students‘ motivation and especially those of the secondary school pupils in Algeria. This evaluation aims to achieve insights into teachers‘ and learners‘ perceptions of the motivation and to explore whether it serves the students expectations in relation to the objectives of the programme as defined by the Ministry of Education and whether the teachers appreciate the material in use. The evaluation phase focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the students and is examined according to a variety of frameworks and criteria. The study of motivation in language learning and language teaching has a long history. The present study investigates what attitudes students in secondary school have towards the English language and what motivates them to learn it. The study is based on a questionnaire regarding motivation and sixty students have participated. The study shows that the students have acknowledged the status of the English language in the world and its function as an international language as well as its function as a tool for communicative purposes. A conclusion is that they have positive attitudes in general towards the English language as well as learning English.
