Résumé: The present dual-focused study is drawn upon two main purposes. First, it investigates whether the phenomenon of second language attrition (L2 attrition) applies to the case of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) after Educated Arabs finish their general instruction. Second, it questions whether the use of the intermediate level of Arabic, labeled as ‘Educated Spoken Arabic’ (ESA), is a direct factor or an outcome of MSA attrition. In this respect, the study takes Educated Algerians as a sample; particularly, Master 2 students at the English department of Ibn Khaldoun University of Tiaret. The investigation was carried out based on the relevant literature and data obtained through both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The findings revealed that the subjects’ MSA skills did get negatively affected after the end of their general instruction. This is mainly due to getting more immersed in learning English, lacking frequent use of MSA, and having a more positive attitude and motivation (ATM) towards foreign languages. Furthermore, the subjects’ use of ESA was found as a result of MSA attrition. In conclusion, the research reached that MSA does endure attrition as a second language in the verbal repertoire of Educated Algerians. Additionally, it outlines a set of recommendations and implications to help strengthen the status of MSA on both the individuals’ and the global levels.
